What a branded app costs with a builder

A South African merchant who wants a branded app from an app builder pays for it on top of everything else. Entry pricing is around R4,500 a month; the larger builders run several times that. It is recurring, per store, denominated in US dollars, and gets worse every time the rand slides.

That price is not compute. Building and shipping an app costs a builder an organisation-level build service, a developer account per platform, and free push. The subscription is margin on labour and risk.

What a builder has that we do not

A longer track record in the app stores and a bigger catalog of storefront widgets. If your need is a storefront app and nothing else, a builder is a reasonable buy. If your customers come back often enough to want an app, the app should be part of the business, not a widget over the store.
